Internet of Containers
2022 – 2024
The IoC project aims to revolutionize container management and logistics by integrating cutting-edge Internet of Things (IoT) technologies. Aligning with sustainability and transparency goals, the IoC system optimizes supply chain processes, particularly in the container terminal of the Port of Thessaloniki. It is designed with a robust set of features to meet diverse user needs, providing real-time container tracking and traceability. Stakeholders can monitor container conditions throughout the journey and respond proactively to delays or breaches, ensuring the integrity of perishable or high-value cargo through instant IoT sensor alerts. Furthermore, the system offers strong security and compliance tools – role-based access control (RBAC) and automated compliance checks – to ensure each shipment meets regulatory standards, while customizable dashboards and alerts allow users to tailor the platform to their operational priorities. The key objectives and results of the IoC project are the following:
• Achieve "Intelligent Visibility" across the container’s journey by monitoring disruptive events and optimizing response strategies.
• Proactively mitigate disruptions through real-time monitoring and predictive analytics, improving efficiency and operational performance.
• Integrate data for end-to-end visibility in the supply chain through a central repository that consolidates multiple data sources and supports forecasting and decision-making.
• Enhance cargo security and compliance via role-based access control and automated checks, ensuring each shipment meets required standards.
• Provide value-added services to customers and strengthen the Port of Thessaloniki’s competitive position in the domestic and global market.
