According to the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, disability is not solely a medical issue but a complex phenomenon that is primarily related to the interaction between the individual and the environment in which they live. To address many of the challenges faced by people with disabilities, it is crucial to improve accessibility and the conditions of their interaction with the environment, which is recognized as a fundamental right for all.

The most significant factor hindering the level of accessibility and mobility in an area is the condition of pedestrianized zones. In this regard, an information system has been developed in the region of Pieria, aiming to highlight the area as an "Accessible Tourist Destination." Using cartographic data, the system provides navigation assistance and comprehensive information about the accessibility conditions of the urban fabric and cultural and tourist infrastructure. The primary goal of the platform is to offer its users the following two capabilities:

  • Providing information on accessibility infrastructure (e.g., ramps, crossings, sidewalk width, tactile paths for the visually impaired, etc.) as well as obstacles (e.g., broken tiles, low-hanging tree branches, outdoor seating, etc.) in pedestrianized areas of the urban environment. By combining these elements, users can plan the safest and most accessible routes in the area of interest.
  • Providing information on the accessibility infrastructure of points of interest (e.g., accessible entrances, restrooms, accessible elevators, etc.), covering both horizontal and vertical navigation.
